Move to Live; Migrate to Survive: Masterclass Series

Movement Migration artists return to Charlotte for a performance of new dance works by women and repertory pieces created by company members at Open Door Studios in Charlotte, NC, USA on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 7:30 PM. Artists include E.E Balcos, Daniel Fetecua, Kim Jones, Masha Maddux, Blakeley White-McGuire, Pablo Francisco Ruvalcaba, Kaustavi Sarkar, Alyce Vallejo, Dominique Willis, Tamara Williams (guest), Shamou (guest) and Lorraina “Rainey” Boyette (apprentice). Purchase tickets to the performance or call the box office at 704-817-9281.

The performance is also paired with four masterclasses at Open Door Studios on Sunday, October 29 from 9:30-12:30 PM, including:

9:30-11am | Int/Adv Ballet |  Studios A/B with Masha Maddux

This class will work on weight transitions, alignment, musicality, and quality of movement. Barre work will set dancers to feel centered and ready to connect larger movements with efficiency and grace. An intermediate/advanced ballet class for students with a considerable amount of experience in ballet technique. Classes will be targeting pre-professional/professional dancers.

9:30-11am | Beg/Int Horton Technique |  Studio C with Dominique Wilis

The Horton Technique, developed by Lester Horton, is a Modern Dance technique that incorporates folk dance, gestures, and isolations designed to fortify, stretch, and strengthen the body. Created with a knowledge of human anatomy, the technique emphasizes a whole body, an anatomical approach designed to correct physical faults while enhancing the dancer's widest range of motion. Combined with varying contemporary styles that engage full movements done to musical phrasing at varying lengths and dynamics, Horton training prepares the dancer for any type of movement style and technique.

11-12:30pm | Adv. Contemporary-Modern | Studios A/B with Blakeley White-McGuire

Building on a range of movement and dance practices including improvisation and partnering dancers will focus on building strength, articulation and stamina through breath initiation. We will connect with a variety of music genres to challenge our established timings and movement qualities, prepare and perform short dance pieces created on-site and in community with every participant and support one another to enjoy the challenges.

11-12:30pm | Beg/Int Limón | Studio C with Daniel Fetecua

Limón Technique places emphasis on the body’s natural rhythms of fall and recovery, the energies and suspensions that come from exploring the stretch and oppositions in the body, and the interplay between weight and weightlessness. The technique is noted for its range of expression and humanism, the immediacy with which a Limón dancer conveys the universality of experience, and the dynamism and the physicality of dance. A Limón-trained dancer has an organic way of moving that is adaptable to a wide range of choreographic styles and prepares him to perform in both classical and contemporary dance forms.
