PROGRAM

5 by ee cummings is choreographed by emerging choreographer Cecilia Whalen. American poet e.e. cummings was also a visual artist. He often printed his poetry in designs on the page and once said his poems were "to be seen and not just heard." This dance translates cummings' words onto the stage to be seen. cummings was known for his wit, his political and social commentary, and his radical use of language and punctuation.

I. Entry is choreographed by Pauline Legras Biahunm, with music by Frederic Chopin.

Traces, choreographed by Artistic Director Kim Jones, explores power dynamics, empathy, and reflection on the memory of a loved one.

Rati Vilaap, choreographed by guest artist Dr. Maya Kulkarni, is a dramatic presentation of human emotion through love and loss. Vilaap means to cry out loud. Rati is the protagonist who is crying for the death of her partner, Kama who brings in the Spring. The four acts progress through “Daze,” “Spring,” “Third Eye,” and finale to a climactic “Mourning.”

Rite my Wild, choreography by Alyce Cristina Vallejo in collaboration with dancer Nadine Barton, is part of a larger work in progress that investigates the ways a feminine being cultivates connection, fuels choice, and leads with divine love to stand up for one’s own truth. Generating a shift of permissions to rituals of life, Rite my Wild explores the duality of a woman's conscious, learned self, and her intuitive knowing.

Closing the evening is A Psalm for Duke choreographed by guest artist Tamara Williams with music by Duke Ellington. This piece explores the play and emphasizes of musicality between blues and gospel and the moving body. This dance is a movement ode to Duke Ellington for his impact on American Black culture in the US and worldwide.
