World Environment Day 2026: The Great Path on Odd Ground

During the week of May 28–31, 2026, Vienna became part of the international celebrations marking the centenary of the Martha Graham Dance Company—one of the most influential institutions in the history of modern dance.

The event was hosted by ANIMA FABRIK Dance Studios, which brought together dance artists, teachers, students, and cultural enthusiasts from Europe and the USA to honor Martha Graham's enduring artistic legacy and explore the role of dance as a bridge between cultures, generations, and societies.

The Vienna program included masterclasses and performances led by renowned Graham Company dancers and teachers, including Artistic Directory Kim Jones. Jones also performed her interpretation of Imperial Gesture (1935), a Martha Graham choreography exploring authoritarianism, power, ego, and the rise of fascism in Europe. Marzia Memoli presented Traces , a contemporary choreography by Kim Jones that examines movement forms of empathy, memory, and reflection.

Kim Jones framed her choreographic work in the workshop with the concept of
water security and at the same time encouraged reflection on the self-evidence of clean drinking water in Vienna – a precious commodity whose value is becoming increasingly apparent in times of global environmental crises.
