A creative movement workshop based on Colombian traditional dance forms merged with modern dance, inspired by the "rejoice" of returning home. [Taller de danza y creación basado en danzas tradicionales Colombianas en combinación con la danza moderna americana, inspirado en el “regocijo” de regresar a casa.]

New York-based choreographer and Movement Migration artist Daniel Fetecua (Colombian) will be joined by Charlotte-based artists Rodrigo (Chile) & Wendy (El Salvador) Jimenez of “RW Latin Dance” and Tamara Williams to teach the week’s classes.


CLASS SCHEDULE + REGISTRATION

The workshop takes place Monday, June 26-Friday, June 30, 2023 with an informal sharing on the last day. Students interested in the Creative Process choreography class must have intermediate-level movement experience in any genre, commit to all 5 days, and commit to the final showcase.

9:00-10:15 AM | Afro-Modern [Danza Moderna Afro] with Tamara Williams. Register for drop-in classes →

  • Afro-Modern dance forms are a fusion of modern dance practices with movement inspired by the African Diaspora and West African dance styles.

10:30-11:30 AM | Open Level Latin Social Dance [Formas de Danza LatinX] with Rodrigo & Wendy Jimenez. Register for drop-in classes →

  • This class will introduce dancers to the basics of Latin Social Dance, drawing on styles such as bachata and salsa. These dances are often done in a social setting while switching partners.

11:30-12:45 PM | Lunch Break [El Almuerzo]

12:45-3:45 PM | Creative Process [Proceso Creativo] with Daniel Fetecua and assisted by Blakeley White-McGuire. *Drop-in classes not available. Must participate in full intensive.

  • English: “Dancing the Memories of Taste Part II” is a creative-process workshop that merges traditional Colombian dance and modern. The inspiration for this workshop examines how we rejoice when we return home.

  • Spanish: “Bailando las memorias del sabor Parte II” Taller de danza y creación basado en danzas tradicionales Colombianas en combinación con la danza moderna americana, inspirado en el “regocijo” de regresar a casa.

In-person classes in Charlotte, NC are capped at 25 participants, ensuring proper social distancing measures. Because of this limit, the Latin Social Dance class will have a zoom component. Students interested in the Creative Process class must have intermediate-level movement experience in any genre, commit to all 5 days, and commit to the final showcase.

Our summer workshop takes place over one week in June. The final payment for your balance is due on the first day of your classes. We encourage a full-week commitment for all classes. Registration coming soon!

GUEST ARTISTS

Daniel Fetecua Soto

A native of Bogotà, Colombia, Daniel is a New York-based dancer, choreographer, educator, and producer. Daniel has been a soloist member of the Limon Dance Company for ten years (2006-2016) dancing lead roles in Jose Limon's master pieces and has appeared as guest artist in Pina Bausch’s Rite of Spring and Tannhäuser.

Daniel is a master teacher of the Limon technique and reconstructor of Limon's repertory, faculty member of the Limón Institute and founder member of Limon4Kids program. He is the founder and artistic director of two dance companies: Pajarillo Pinta’o, a dance company that preserves and promotes the Colombian traditional dances through dance performance, workshops and classes and D-Moves, a contemporary dance project that combines Colombian traditions, Modern Dance, and German Tanz-Theater. He is also a founding member of Movement Migration, an international collective of seasoned dance artists directed by Kim Jones. Read on →

Rodrigo & Wendy Jimenez

Rodrigo and Wendy Jimenez are renowned instructors and performers. They have trained extensively with World Master Instructors and ESPN World Salsa & Argentine Tango Champions, and have been featured in several public broadcast tv shows. They have conducted workshops and performed Salsa, Bachata, Tango, Flamenco, Kizomba, and “SALSA TANGO” & “BACHATANGO” fusions.

RW has traveled to teach at congresses, festivals, dance events, and schools across the United States, and has also traveled internationally to Spain, Chile, Puerto Rico, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam to teach.

Rodrigo is an adjunct faculty for the Dance Department of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and they’re both teaching artists for the NC Blumenthal Performing Arts Center and the NC Dance Theatre.

Tamara Williams

Tamara Williams is currently an Associate Professor of Dance at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and she earned her M.F.A. from Hollins University.

Her choreography has been presented internationally in Serbia, Switzerland, Trinidad, Jamaica, Mexico and Brazil. Moving Spirits, Inc. is her contemporary arts organization dedicated to performing, researching, documenting and producing African Diaspora arts. Williams’ scholarly work includes: Giving Life to Movement: The Silvestre Dance Technique; "Reviving Culture Through Ring Shout," published in The Dancer-Citizen; and The African Diaspora and Civic Responsibility (forthcoming). Her awards include two Faculty Research Grants which support her in-depth study and investigation of Ring Shout Dance Traditions and Òrìṣà dances.
