Artistic Director Kim Jones envisioned bridging traditional and social Latin Dance forms with modern dance. Thanks to the funding, in part, by the ASC Cultural Vision Grant, Movement Migration is offering a FREE week-long workshop at Open Door Studios (with a Zoom option) in Charlotte, NC that culminates with an end-of-week informal showing on Saturday, June 19. New York-based choreographer and Movement Migration artist Daniel Fetecua (Colombian) will create a new work, “Bailando las Memorias del Sabor” with assistant and UNC Charlotte alumna Nathalia Raigosa (Colombian). Charlotte-based artists Rodrigo (Chile) & Wendy (El Salvador) Jimenez of “RW Latin Dance” will also join the workshop to teach Latin Dance Forms.

CLASS SCHEDULE

The workshop takes place Monday, June 14-Friday, June 18, with an informal showing on June 19. Those participating in the Creative Process class will showcase the movement they’ve helped create during the week. Please note the start and end times of classes. We have taken extra precautions for your safety during COVID-19 and have included breaks after each class to ensure thorough cleaning of the studio space.

9:00-9:55 AM

Modern Dance Warm-Up with Artistic Director Kim Jones

This class will incorporate the core principles of the Martha Graham technique to prepare and warm up the body combined with a Gyro Flow with Ursula Verduzco.

10-11:15 AM

Latin Dance Forms with Guest Artists Wendy & Rodrigo Jimenez

Students will learn elements from various social and traditional Latin forms, including Salsa and Bachata.

12:00-3:30 PM

Creative Process: A new, collaborative work “Bailando las Memorias del Sabor” will be created based on Colombian traditional dance and José Limón Modern Dance Technique.

Taught by Daniel Fetecua and Nathalia Raigosa, work created during the week will be showcased at the showcase on June 19. Class includes a 15-minute break at 1:15 PM.

In-person classes in Charlotte, NC are capped at 20 participants due to COVID-19, ensuring proper social distancing measures. Because of this limit, the 9 AM warm-up class and the 10 AM Latin Dance class have a virtual, drop-in option. Students who register for the morning classes are not required to participate in the end-of-week showcase. Students interested in the Creative Process class must have intermediate-level movement experience in any genre and commit to all 5 days from 12:00-3:30 PM and the June 19 showcase. Please submit a 1-minute video of you moving in any dance form when you register. Sign up for classes in English or Española!

*In the event that the state of North Carolina goes into a  strict lock-down due to COVID-19, the governor of North Carolina will not allow us to host this project in person. We will hold all classes virtually on Zoom instead.*

Daniel Fetecua Soto

A native of Bogotà, Colombia, Daniel holds a BFA from Folkwang-University of the Arts in Essen-Germany. He was a guest artist in Pina Bausch’s Rite of Springand Tannhäuser. He was a soloist for the José Limón Dance Company (2006-2016) and is a régisseur and master teacher of the Limón modern dance technique.

Daniel has danced in works by Jiří Kylián, Susane Linke, Rodrigo Pederneiras/ Grupo Corpo, Lar Lubovitch, Anna Sokolow, and Doris Humphrey. He has served on faculty with the Limón Institute and is a founding member of Limón4Kids.

He is the founder and artistic director of two NYC-based companies: Pajarillo Pinta’o, which preserves and promotes Colombian traditional dances, and D-Moves, which focuses on contemporary dance projects that combine Colombian traditions, dance forms, modern dance, and German TanzTheater. He is currently an adjunct professor at NYU.

Wendy & Rodrigo Jimenez

Rodrigo and Wendy Jimenez are renowned instructors and performers. They have trained extensively with World Master Instructors and ESPN World Salsa & Argentine Tango Champions, and have been featured in several public broadcast tv shows. They have conducted workshops and performed Salsa, Bachata, Tango, Flamenco, Kizomba, and “SALSA TANGO” & “BACHATANGO” fusions.

RW has traveled to teach at congresses, festivals, dance events, and schools across the United States, and has also traveled internationally to Spain, Chile, Puerto Rico, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam to teach.

Rodrigo is an adjunct faculty for the Dance Department of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and they’re both teaching artists for the NC Blumenthal Performing Arts Center and the NC Dance Theatre.

Nathalia Raigosa

Nathalia Raigosa started dancing at the age of 3 at the Ballet Folklorico de Antioquia where she learned Colombian traditional dances and ballet in Colombia. She later moved to The United States where she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a BA in Dance in 2016. Nathalia moved to New York City and performed the role of Yolanda for the Off-Broadway production of In the Heights, under the direction of Luis Salgado, where she was also the Latin dance captain. 

After only six months in New York, she moved to Dubai where she became a principal dancer and artistic coordinator for the Dubai Dance Company as part of BNF and traveled as an artist to Oman, Egypt, and Romania.

Nathalia is currently training and performing in New York City as part of the professional salsa dance company Yamulee under the direction of Osmar Perrones.
